Don’t Wake Me I Plan On Sleeping

March 2nd, 2005 by bigrobot

One thing I always appreciated about LiveJournal was the cool little feature that had you list what you were currently listening to. Well, I think this tradition should be carried over to Friendster Blogs as well. So, for those of you who recognize the title to this post will know exactly who I am listening to at this moment.

Work was busy per usual today and I am beat of course. I still need to work on a couple of projects before I go to bed and get some sweet, sweet sleep. Speaking of sleep, I probably won’t get a lot of it tomorrow night. I’m thinking about going to 80s @ Fusion. I went a couple of weeks ago and although I had fun because there was a lot of prior beer consumption involved at a bowling alley in Broken Arrow no less, I did notice the dance floor being a tad scarce of all those fun and intriguing folks I used to love to see at retro night. I guess we’re all growing up. We all have jobs to go to on Friday morning and if they are anything like mine then you must do that who “be there 100%” kind of thing. Those are mornings that Starbucks can’t even wake me up or the fact that I just paid nearly $4 for a fucking cup of coffee. Must be that fancy whipped cream they put on top.

Has anyone out there who cares to respond to this pointless post, listened to Bright Eyes double album? I just ordered it and it hasn’t come in yet, but I’m excited. I loved the first one. I also ordered the new Allison Krauss. Can’t wait to get that one too. I think that lately she and Deathcab for Cutie are the few artists that can actually bring a tear to me eye. You have to admire emotional songwriting and delivery.

Well, I must get to work for the is work to be done.

Designing Destinations

March 1st, 2005 by bigrobot

I’ve worked in the design business for almost six years and dealt with many a burnout period. This current period of burnout has got to take the cake. Since starting a new corporate job last summer I’m back in the private sector and although the pay reflects it so does the onslaught of work. I knew it would be busy, but I never imagined how much work I would be doing.

I can’t really complain too much because there are some decent perks, but there are high demands as well and so much can seemingly be at stake for a variety of projects with tight deadlines looming. It’s actually hard to plan or much less take a day off to enjoy a nice break from it all. On top of working like a dog, I keep taking on clients in my freelance business. I think I must do this to keep myself somewhat balanced in my work. By balanced I must mean that I need non-corporate related projects to work on. Oh, and the extra cash is nice. Then again, it’s not all about money because I continue to take on pro bono jobs as well and they can turn into almost full-time jobs if you let them. Thank God I can write part of it off on my taxes.

Designing seems easier for me and at the same time much harder. I think part of it is competition and part of it is trying to be original and creative on a daily basis. You can only layout so many black and white announcement cards and one color newspaper ads before you feel yourself feeling sucked in to a vacuum of boring and unfulfilling work. Then, when something exciting and new does come along for you to delve into, you feel like you’ve got nothing.

Perhaps a break is in order. Perhaps another trip. I went to NY last Fall, but I don’t think it did the trick. I didn’t have the time or extra money to really stay very long. This summer is being planned and there are things I need and want to do that will change my outlook and POV on my job and hopefully my life. A roadtrip is looking good about now and by the time July rolls around I will be ready to hop in the car and just go. But first I need a serious tune-up on the ol’ Jetta. She’s been sputtering just a little lately and I don’t want to take any chances.

First!

IT’s my first post and boy did we fumble getting there. Anyway, come back for more uninteresting tids and bits about me and my adventures in paradise.
